Revisions made to Option B draft: Creating a Standalone Indoor Standard for Heat Illness Prevention
Cal/OSHA has gathered public advisory meetings to develop a proposed regulation for minimizing heat-related illness among workers in indoor places of employment.
At these advisory meetings, stakeholders and the public have an opportunity to provide input for this proposed standard.
Here are the latest revisions from the February 16, 2018 meeting.

OSHA Increases Their Penalty Amounts by 2%
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has adjusted their penalty amounts last month by 2% to reflect current inflation rates.
As of January 2, 2018, OSHA has set the following civil penalty amounts for these violations:

- Serious/Other-Than-Serious/Posting Requirements = $12,934 per violation
- Failure to Abate = $12,934 per day beyond the abatement date
- Willful or Repeated = $129,336 per violation.

U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries in 2016
The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released the National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries in 2016.
There were a total of 5,190 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States in 2016, a 7-percent increase from the 4,836 fatal injuries reported in 2015. This is the third consecutive increase in annual workplace fatalities and the first tim emore than 5,000 fatalities have been recorded by the Census of Fatal Occupation Injuries (CFOI) since 2008, The fatal injury rate increased to 3.6 per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers from 3.4 in 2015, the highest rate since 2010.

Paul A Zoubek, CSP, CESCP, SMS is president with Zoubek Consulting, LLC in San Diego and is a nationally recognized consultant in the area of electrical safety. He provides expert advice in the areas of management and engineering control of electrical hazards for companies nationwide. He advises companies in the areas of engineering electrical hazard control, written electrical safety program development, and training. He has presented numerous training courses and written several articles on electrical safety/arc flash focusing on NFPA 70E.
Webinar Description:
NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety in the Workplace) continues to address the concept of risk assessment and mitigation. The 2018 edition introduces human error in the likelihood of an incident as part of the assessment. To address human error, qualified persons must be familiar with human performance concepts as they pertain to risk. In addition other factors that affect the likelihood variable in risk assessment must be addressed. This presentation will cover the overall risk assessment process as required by NFPA 70E focusing on the likelihood variable as it pertains to the most recent requirements.
Objectives:
- Define risk as it pertains to electrical safety.
- Identify causes of human error and its effects on job performance as a component of risk assessment and the likelihood variable.
- Use human performance tools provided in NFPA 70E, Annex Q when completing job site reviews.
- Utilize additional resources for determining the likelihood that arc flash will occur.
